When you say Canada and Canadian education, most people think of beautiful nature, maple syrup or hockey. But for us at Maple Bear Brno, Canada means something much more important. It is a country that has managed to build education on respect, diversity, cooperation and trust in the pupil. And that is why we are based on the Canadian approach here in Brno.
Not because we want to educate pupils “the Canadian way” and tear them away from the Czech environment. Quite the opposite. We want to give them a firm footing here at home, while also giving them the openness, language confidence and skills they’ll need in a rapidly changing world.
A country where diversity is a natural part of life
Canada is a country where people of different cultures, languages and life experiences have been living side by side for a long time. Diversity is not perceived as a problem there, but as a natural part of society. Canada is often referred to as a cultural mosaic. Each person retains their uniqueness and at the same time contributes to the whole. This is an idea that is very close to us at Maple Bear Brno.
Even at school, we believe that each student comes with their own pace, personality, strengths, questions and the way they learn best. Our goal is not to unite pupils into one template. We want to help them grow so that they feel safe, understand themselves, be able to cooperate with others and gradually discover what is in them.

The Canadian educational approach is inspiring for us precisely because it does not put the pupil in the role of a passive listener. At Maple Bear Brno, we transfer this philosophy to everyday teaching. We encourage pupils to understand what they are learning, not just to memorize the correct wording. We want them to be able to think about the problem, explain their opinion, listen to others, look for solutions and not be afraid to make mistakes. Because a mistake is not a failure. It’s a natural part of learning.
English as a natural language of everyday life
Language also plays a big role in Canadian education. Canada is officially a bilingual country where English and French have a firm place. In addition to them, many other languages appear in everyday life, which were brought to the country by families from different parts of the world. From an early age, pupils there perceive that language is not just a school subject. It is a way to communicate, express an idea, establish a relationship and understand another person. We naturally want to work with the language at Maple Bear Brno in the same way.
At our primary school, teaching is 50:50 in Czech and English. English is not a goal in itself for us. It is not something that pupils learn only from a textbook or at the blackboard. It is a living tool of everyday school life. In English, pupils discover, create, ask, cooperate and gradually gain confidence that they can really move in the second language.
At the same time, it is very important for us that pupils have a strong Czech language, a relationship with their culture and security in the environment in which they grow up. Maple Bear Brno is not a classic international school that would leave the Czech educational context aside. We build on the Czech framework educational program and connect it with Canadian methodology. Pupils thus get the best of both worlds. A firm local anchorage and an open view beyond the borders.
Strong Czech roots and openness to the world
For parents, this means important security. Their child does not lose contact with the Czech environment, the Czech language or the requirements of Czech education. At the same time, however, he grows up as a pupil in an environment where English is a natural part of the day, where independence, communication, curiosity and the ability to think in context are supported.
At Maple Bear Brno, we don’t want students to feel like they have to choose between where they come from and the world that opens up to them. We want them to have both. Certainty in their own culture and the courage to communicate, cooperate and think in an international environment.
A teacher as a guide who really knows the student
The Canadian approach also inspires us in how we look at the relationship between teacher and student. We believe that quality education does not start with a textbook, but with a relationship. A pupil learns best where he feels safe, accepted and at the same time sensitively guided. He needs adults who understand him, set kind boundaries and give him space to grow gradually.
That is why at Maple Bear Brno we work in smaller teams and with a greater degree of individual approach. Two teachers in the class allow us to be closer to the students, to better perceive their needs and to support them not only academically but also humanly. We see each pupil as a whole. Not only as someone who has to master the curriculum, but as a personality who learns to communicate, cooperate, manage emotions, build self-confidence and gradually take responsibility for their learning.
Skills that pupils need for life
This is one of the greatest benefits of Canadian education for us. It does not separate knowledge from character. Pupils learn math, language, science and the world around them, but at the same time they develop skills that they will need for a lifetime. To be able to ask. To be able to express your opinion. Our school in Nová Zbrojovka is part of the global Maple Bear network, but its heart is here in Brno. We are part of an international educational concept, and at the same time we want to remain a school where we know each pupil by name.
