The preparatory year (Grade 0) at Maple Bear Brno is designed for children aged 5-6 who are not yet fully ready to enter the first grade of elementary school. This preparatory year focuses on developing foundational skills in areas like fine motor skills, writing, reading, and social development.
Each class accommodates a maximum of 15 children, with more than half of the activities led by two qualified teachers – one speaking Czech and the other English. Teachers support all children, regardless of their language proficiency, helping them gain confidence and make progress. Education in Grade 0 is evenly split between Czech and English, providing a balanced bilingual environment.
Grade 0 at Maple Bear Brno is recognized as compulsory preschool education. We welcome children regardless of the kindergarten they previously attended. Our preparatory class is designed to smoothly transition children into the grade 1 while offering them the advantage of bilingual education in Czech and English. We look forward to welcoming new members to our community!
Each day at Maple Bear begins with Circle Time, where children come together to share their thoughts, practice calendar routines, and talk about what the day will bring. After that, they move into Learning Centers – small, focused areas where they explore Czech, English, math, science or creative activities through play and hands-on discovery.
This is followed by free play and a morning snack, giving children time to socialize and recharge before heading outside for outdoor play. After returning indoors, they enjoy lunch together and engage in calming, age-appropriate resting activities like storytime or quiet games instead of a full nap.
The afternoon includes another round of Learning Center activities that build on the day’s discoveries. Later, children enjoy a light snack and can choose to join afterschool clubs and extracurricular activities, such as our school circus, sport club, music sessions, art club, and more.
Our Preparatory Class (Grade 0) offers the perfect bridge between kindergarten and elementary school. It’s designed for children aged 5-6 who are ready for more structure, more challenge, and more support while still learning through play, creativity, and connection.
Unlike a traditional kindergarten, our program gently introduces school habits such as focused work time, collaborative learning, daily routines, and bilingual instruction across subjects. Children build early literacy and numeracy skills, develop confidence in both Czech and English, and learn how to be part of a classroom community.
