Adaptation at Maple Bear Brno
Starting kindergarten, first encounter with English and transitioning to school are big steps. At Maple Bear Brno, we therefore perceive adaptation sensitively and with respect for the pace of each child. We help children build a sense of safety, security and trust so that they can gradually open up to a new environment, relationships and learning.
For us, adaptation is not just the first few days. It is a process in which both the child and the parents need peace, support and good communication.
Learn more about adaptation
When a child comes to kindergarten for the first time
The beginning of kindergarten is a big change for a young child. Therefore, they first need to gain a sense of security, get to know a new environment and create a relationship with teachers. In the first days, we give children time to orient themselves in the daily rhythm, manage the morning goodbye and gradually engage in play and joint activities at their own pace.
Simple and predictable routines, repetitive activities and plenty of space for free play help us. Teachers monitor what a particular child needs and adjust the level of support accordingly. Some children quickly join the team, others need more time to observe and stay close to an adult. Both are fine.
The goal of adaptation is not for the child to “function on their own” as quickly as possible, but to gain confidence that kindergarten is a safe and understandable place where they can gradually become independent, establish relationships and discover new things with confidence.
A new language comes naturally, not under pressure
In a bilingual environment, Czech and English are intertwined throughout the day. A child or pupil does not hear English in just one lesson, but during games, conversations, projects, movement, daily routines and work with the curriculum. Czech and English-speaking teachers work together in the classrooms, so both languages have a natural and visible place.
We do not expect the child to start speaking in the new language immediately. First, they create understanding, connect words with specific situations, and gradually gain the courage to react. Teachers use pictures, gestures, modeling, songs, rhymes, repetition, games and practical activities to make the meaning understandable even without translating each sentence.
We observe not only what the child or pupil can say, but also what he or she already understands. Gradually, listening and understanding, speaking and later also reading and writing develop. Thanks to this, English does not become just a school subject, but a real tool for communication and learning.
From a preschooler to a student step by step
The transition to the first grade is not just a change in the building or the schedule. The pupil learns to function in a new regime, manage a greater degree of independence, work longer on a task, orient themselves to expectations, and gradually take on more responsibility for their learning. That is why, even at the beginning of school, we place great emphasis on relationships, a sense of security, clear routines, and building a class community.
We use the first weeks for students to get to know each other, create a relationship with teachers, and learn the rules and way of working together. We add academic demands gradually as pupils feel more confident in the environment and understand how their new school day works.
Children who are transitioning from our preschool preparatory year are already familiar with the Maple Bear environment, the bilingual way of working and a number of daily routines. At school, we can therefore build on the relationships, language experience and independence they have already built, and gradually expand academic expectations. The goal is for the pupil to enter school with a sense of security, curiosity and confidence in their own abilities.
